Read Into Thin Air before this one. I was expecting the whole book to be about the 1996 Everest expedition, but that was only about a quarter and the novel itself is more of a memoir that captures Weathers’ whole life and the trials and tribulations of using mountain climbing as a coping mechanism. Into Thin Air gives the whole story of that expedition in 1996, and helps provide some more context into this read.

4.3 stars. If you want to read a novel about that fateful day on Everest, there are so many to choose from. (Personally, I loved Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer). This is the story of Beck Weathers. Who he is, what lead him to climb Everest, and the toll it took on his family and himself. It’s an introspective look at his selfish choice to put mountaineering and the challenge ahead of everything else. I enjoyed learning more about who he is, his motivations, as well as some of his other climbing adventures. Overall a great listen if you’re familiar enough with the disaster and want to know more about his life.
It was not the book I expected - an account of the Everest story - but turned out to be an interesting memoir with other mountaineering stories. Beck Weathers is a great storyteller.

I would recommend reading Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer prior to this book-- it will give all the background you need to understand what actually happened on Everest
