The story of a Chinese woman stuck in a less-than-healthy (but not abusive) marriage who has lost her sense of self and purpose, and an older pianist who never found his spark again once he lost it. Very magical realism-esque with talking mushrooms. Lovely writing and very atmospheric, and the plot was a lot more interesting than a lot of similar set ups. Highly recommend. 

Spoilery summary:

A woman who feels estranged from her music and her husband starts dreaming of talking mushrooms in rooms you can only escape by going back to sleep. She then starts receiving mushrooms addressed to someone else and finally a message from a long-lost pianist, who she goes to look for.

This is definitely a story. Definitely relates to mushrooms and piano, but I would be lying if I told you I understood this book. Seemed like there were some overarching lessons, but I couldn’t quite grasp it.

Infinitely readable. Quiet. It didn’t all quite come together for me, and I think some of that was down to the length. This story may have benefited from a bit more depth and detail, it almost felt too simple. I also struggled a bit with the main character’s flaws, but that’s more down to personal preference.
