Lighter Than My Shadow by Katie Green is a free NetGalley e-comicbook that I read in mid-August.
It is utter genius to use leaves of grey/blue/murky beige homemade paper and to fold creases for the cells that house vignettes related to body dysmorphic disorder. Katie, the narrator/illustrator, tells of her childhood, teenhood, and early adulthood struggles with food, perfectionism, traumatic memories, and body image manifesting as overwhelming, encompassing dark inky squiggles. Although the subject matter is deep, distressing, and drawn over the course of 500+ pages, it is extremely meaningful and likely the best graphic novel I've read this year.

God. This was a stab.
While I've never experienced first hand having an eating disorder or a few other subjects the author focused on, I've dealt with body image issues. I've been thankful to not live with it in the extreme way some people do. My heart goes out to them in hopes that they find acceptance and own how awesome they are because they're PRETTY FUCKIN AWESOME. <3

This book was an insightful look at the ways eating disorders can impact more than your physical being but your mental health.

The publisher provided me with the opportunity to read this in exchange for providing feedback. (via NetGalley)
Interesting concept I feel really highlighted the authors struggle with her eating disorders and being a victim of abuse. It was raw and honest, covering a topic that some won't talk about. The accompanying art work matched the story perfectly and helped show what words couldn't explain.
