When I purchased this graphic novel I assumed I'd be learning more than relating, but there were many parts in Katie's story that hit home and made my heart ache. Thank you Katie for sharing your journey through trauma, seeking help, self-esteem, and recovery. I may not be artistic enough to publish a graphic novel as detailed and intriguing as this one, but I'd like to share my experiences in the future because there are people out there who are trying to maneuver around the same obstacles as me. Maybe they could even see themselves in my stories like I saw myself in Lighter than My Shadow.
Breathtaking. Triggering. Read with caution, but READ.
Lighter Than My Shadow is one of those books that I locate very close to my own heart as the story was incredibly close to my own experiences. Green, writing from her own experiences, does not shy away from depicting the grim, ugly underbelly of eating disorders; nothing is glossed over or romanticised here. The illustrations are dark and beautiful, effectively portraying the storm that is the mind of someone struggling with this mental illness. Anyone that reads this book will leave it with a shard, varying in size depending on the person, of shrapnel within them. I don't think you can walk away from it without being remotely unchanged.

Painfully difficult at times, it was a beautiful reminder that words aren't always enough to explain the darkness inside.
I had wanted to read this for years as I’d heard it was an excellent graphic novel - it far surpassed my expectations and I simply couldn’t fault it. The artwork turns the mundane into the surreal and the invisible into the horrifyingly visible. Brave, important, compelling and utterly heartbreaking.
