In the majority of cases I hate 'recovery literature' because they read like how to manuals and the writers seem to want to prove how sick they were more than anything else. That or they end with a miraculous recovery and they love their body and they never have any problems again ever. This book is different. It is searingly honest and she depicts the emotional turmoil of eating disorders and the obsessions and the motivating factors better than anyone. It is so moving- and the illustration is divine, I didn't think it was possible to depict mental illness so well through drawing but she's done it. I started crying on page twenty and didn't really stop :')

Book Nerd Your Way... Book #4

This was Recommended by my Librarian and Friend Melissa.

This was so deep and moving. For the author to really put herself out there and share what she went through with the world just to hopefully reach one person that it may help was astounding. I loved this book and have recommended it to several people that may feel the relief in knowing that they are not alone in how they feel.

To the Author: Thank you!

There is some pretty rough subject matter in this book. It details one woman's struggle with an eating disorder and sexual assault. I think the book does a wonderful job portraying these issues and shows why it can be so difficult for people that suffer from them to overcome them. While I don't imagine I would ever have to deal with these sorts of problems, I found myself identifying with her at some points.

I loved the art. The use of the "shadow" lingering around her pretty much non-stop was a great visual indicator of what was going on in her mind. It emphasized the struggle and horror of these events. Some of the images can be repetitive at times, which really serves to show how pervasive these type of issues can be in someone's life.

This wasn't an easy book to read, but when I gave it my full attention it move quickly. I have a lot of respect for the creator for putting this out there.

This book is a powerful reflection of one girl's lifelong struggle with an eating disorder. Normally books with these kinds of topics I try to stay away from because I feel like they romanticize or sensationalize eating disorders. This book did not feel this way. Katie Green's poignant narrative shows us all the facets of her life and what her eating disorder took away from her. The cartoon illustrations give this book another level of depth because many young girls can see themselves in the author's position. Recovery is not linear, and it can feel overwhelming. While I don't think this book would be helpful for adolescents who are currently struggling with eating disorders, it's an impactful graphic novel for survivors, as well as a useful educational tool for friends and family members.
