Ghost Writers on the Storm
Review of the Amazon Original Stories eBook (March 19, 2024), released simultaneously with the Audible Original audiobook.
This was a great modern day gothic fiction with true crime ghost writer Grace Logan accepting a commission to write the memoir of reclusive author Claudia Blackwell at her island retreat. The stormy setting is creepy (the island mansion is named The Overlook, shades of [a:Stephen King|3389|Stephen King|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1362814142p2/3389.jpg] & [b:The Shining|11588|The Shining (The Shining, #1)|Stephen King|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1353277730l/11588._SY75_.jpg|849585]!), the servants act suspicious and the author was suspected of a vicious triple murder in her youth (I immediately thought of author [a:Anne Perry|6331|Anne Perry|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1681414861p2/6331.jpg], even though the cases are not similar). Although not convicted at the time, the accusation has stayed with Blackwell for her entire career. She says that she is finally ready to reveal the truth.
More revelations are in store, a previous ghost writer had already accepted the assignment but then died in an apparent accident on a stormy night. A warning is revealed on the guest room's bathroom mirror when steam from a bath fills the air. I thought that the atmosphere and setting here were well done, and the allusions to other authors were clever. There is of course the now expected final twist when the reveal arrives.

4⭐️ — When I originally saw the cover and the title I assumed the story would be about a haunted typewriter or a ghost actually writing a story but boy was I wrong. A story about a killer studying other killers and her vices getting the best of her? TOP TIER! They honestly had me fooled the whole time but the story also confirms that we are usually our biggest downfall.
2/5 - I think if the story was longer, and fleshed out, I would have liked it. I thought it was just okay. Nothing too groundbreaking or new.
dark
Perfect for fans of Gothic fiction and dark psychological thrillers, this story is a testament to White's talent for crafting compelling and evocative storytelling. The setting was incredibly eerie on its own, but the internal dialogue was on point with her longer novels--super twisted, emotionally charged, page-turning. I was absolutely hooked after the first few paragraphs.
My favorite out of this collection! Gothic vibes and even though I guessed the twist before the end, seeing it come together was quite satisfying.
