I didn’t realize this was his first book, but it certainly shows. The writing wasn’t bad but it didn’t quite feel like him. This felt like a mix of Grey’s Anatomy, Law & Order SVU and CSI. I’m not sure if I mean that in a good way or a bad but hey, I saw it through and actually had to keep reminding myself that the book was written in the 60s when I found flaws. Not bad, not one of my favorites but the flaws I found were more to do with my own taste than the author, his style of writing, or the content. I’d still recommend it if you’re in the mood for a medical drama.

It was a bit too technical for me at points, but an enjoyable story. A different view on abortion and it's ramifications. Worth a read.

Re-read Aug 2015 - Probably been ~15 yrs since I last read it.

Very good still and holds up well. Also very interesting to read something dealing with illegal abortions in the time before Roe vs Wade, especially with all the attacks against abortion that are currently a hot topic.

Good though there are some interesting style choices that are made. Half of it is a thriller and half of it is a discussion of the medical community in Boston. So sometimes it feels like a thriller that is filled in with medical talk; and sometimes it feels like a medical talk that is loosely held together by a thriller. Still interesting read either way and is definitely a page-turner by the end.

Crichton first novel. While entertaining, lots of holes and head scratching moments. Still you can tell he was going places.3/5

Interesting medical mystery/thriller

I enjoyed this book. I am a retired RN, so I enjoyed the detailed medical descriptions and terms. I found the differences and similarities with medicine in the 21st century interesting as well

An early medical thriller from Crichton that's grown unfortunately relevant once again in the wake of Roe v. Wade being overturned. The plotting here is much more confident and well-staged than it was in The Terminal Man, even if the world of the story is similarly hermetically sealed off in a way that amplifies the occasional narrative convenience (this is something he gets much better at over the years). Perhaps most importantly, I have have to stress that I'm not being sarcastic when I say this, I feel like I learned some things!

Great medical thriller , medicine outdated but still very entertaining

An informative medical thriller that left me wanting more. The writer tackles the differences in medical practice based on age, culture, and position. I was easily transported into the field of Medicine in Boston & kept me guessing who killed Karen.
