funny reflective slow-paced

I listened to the radio adaptation, narrated in a masterful fashion by Stephen Fry. I do hope to read it one day!

A novel without a point

As the plot of Thackeray's Vanity Fair has been canvassed by many other writers much more articulate and critical than myself, I shall bypass the normal summary of the book. I shall content myself by saying that this novel is timeless in its themes and style. Thackeray's style is amazingly modern in its feel, and the hundreds of pages fly by quickly. The character of Becky Sharp is an intriguing mix of annoying minx and endearing waif. Amelia is both frustrating in her near perfection and admirable in her loyalty. Written mostly tongue-in-cheek, readers are never quite certain how seriously to take the narrator or his observations.

As has been observed many times, Vanity Fair is a cutting social satire on class and roles. Yet even with its commentary, one cannot help but be pulled along by the plot and the predicaments the characters put themselves into.

DID NOT FINISH

The more of this book I read, the more I disliked it but I ploughed on until half way through when I had to abandon it. Don't get me wrong - it's beautifully written, for sure. However, all the characters quickly become frustrating and dislikable and the chain of events set in motion by their numerous failings becomes increasingly depressing. Apparently that's the point but as it went on I found it so unfailingly negative that I couldn't enjoy it.

becky sharp deserves the world

A great read, never ceases to delight!

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

Couldn't stand more than a couple hours of Frederick Davidson's snooty narration of the audiobook.
