IT'S OVER IT'S OVER IT'S FINALLY OVER
Okay. I have a lot of thoughts on this and it is 11 pm so none of them are going to make any sense. So. Loved Becky, and her significance as an unlikeable female protagonist, but imo there were too many other characters and while I do think the subtlety was very well done, I also think that the book could have and should have been a lot shorter because there were whole chapters in which nothing other than exposition happened in the most long-winded fashion possible which was annoying, to say the least. Would have been a lot better in its original form/if I hadn't been speed-reading it but what can I say. Also would have enjoyed it more had I been alive in the 1800s, because while it's relatively accessible and applicable to the modern age, some of the military and aristocratic references made absolutely no sense to me, plus a lot of the stuff that was ground-breaking at the time didn't feel that ground-breaking nearly 200 years on. Also wasn't a huge fan of the racism throughout (yes ik historical context but it is extremely irritating to have to constantly be primed for cheap Jew jokes whenever you read a classic so I think my point still stands). Would probably recommend, as it's definitely a classic and has stood the test of time for a reason, but it's very archaic, rambling and way too long so I wouldn't go into it thinking your in for a particularly fun or easy time.
tl;dr: objectively good but god is it boring

Actually boring, I got the satire but it's like 'ok', the fat fella was funny and my brain tingled up whenever M. Napolean was mentioned, India stuff was less fun than you'd think
I had a hard time putting this down. I enjoyed, enjoyed being annoyed with, or enjoyed hating, almost all the characters. Becky Sharp I found riveting--almost afraid to see what she'd do next, but finding myself rooting for her all the same. George Osborne I wanted to kick in the shins. Amelia Sedley I wanted to shake until she got some sense into her! And so on. Poor Amelia--the only one of them, with the exception of Dobbin, who cares about people for themselves and not for their assets. Anyway--this was a bit of a slog at 800-some pages, but well worth reading.
I did not expect this, but I had a fantastic time with Vanity Fair!
The length of this classic can be intimidating but I admit I was so entertained I just could not put it down and actually finished it in a few days. There is a lot happening over the course of many years and I did not find any dull moment.
Becky Sharp is a master of ingenuity and manipulation, you can’t pretend that you don’t admire her cleverness and cutthroat attitude. The cast of this masterpiece is brilliant and so full of nuances, you really get a full range of personalities and experiences.
I had a very good time, William M. Thackerey definitively has a great sense of humor. I will certainly re-read this again, such a great surprise, really recommend!

The only thing keeping this from being 5 stars is that I really should have picked up the abridged version 😂 there was a lot of prattle about all types of different people who really had nothing whatsoever to do with the story.
This is a very fun story and I really enjoyed it. Of course, I absolutely hated that Becky Sharp! I’ll tell you, she got a much better ending than she deserved! Amelia was so sweet, but I wish she would have stood up for herself more often, the poor thing.
William Dobbin, is by far the best character out of them all! I would die for that man 😍
