I needed a break from my current read. I needed something quick and plot driven to break up the slow pace of the novel I was reading. I decided I'd jump into Frostbitten: 12 Hymns of Misery by Steve Stred that I had won from him in an Instagram giveaway. I haven't read any of his work but the reviews were glowing so I jumped in for some fun horror stories (horror is fun for me, ok?) While the short stories read quick, they weren't necessarily easy reads! I was confronted by haunting sorrow, overwhelming grief, despair and that was just the first two stories! For Balder Walks and Jim (the first two in the collection) ended up being my favorites. They were both so heartbreaking and emotional. They effected me the most because they both had to do with great, REAL, fears of mine; I'll say no more lest I spoil anything. However, the rest of the collection did not disappoint. Every story was well thought out, developed, and imaginative. For the most part, they were not blood and guts horror. There were some gruesome scenes but it was never over-the-top gore for gore's sake.

This collection of stories is why I love the horror genre so much. It proves there is so much more substance and depth to horror than a slash 'em all story. These stories were full of real fears, raw emotions, life lessons, but also a healthy dose of the things that go bump in the night.
