I really enjoyed the book but I wish that the author had put an appendix or dictionary of some of the Arabic words or some of the other world building words. I immersive read this with the audiobook and the narrator had a beautiful accent and had I not also been eye reading I would have been quite confused.

This is one of those books that I'm probably going to be too harsh on, but its because I think it holds so much greatness. It needed a stronger edit: the world was fascinating, the slow-burn romance delightful, but there were just enough moments of confusion and poor narration. Loved that she went for big political intrigue, loved the monsters. It was like a way more inventive and interesting Throne of Glass, with trials that actually meant something to the plot and a believable strong fmc. But it started really slow, the world building in the beginning was clunky, and with a tighter edit could have been incredible. And I feel bad making that critique! The clunkiest world building in the world is in Fourth Wing, and this was certainly less clunky than that. But I don't think Fourth Wing is anything more than just silly fun, and this had some legit promise beyond that.
