A number of well-read people recommended this book, so my expectations were high. But the whole book feels like a freshman lit class. Much of it is not her own original writing. About half the book is her reciting fairytales and legends, many of which I was already familiar with, so the retellings felt tedious at times. The pearls of wisdom she gleans out of each story do not feel novel, although they may have been when it was published. There is a line here there that I found interesting, but overall I would not recommend it. I may have liked it more if I first read it as a teenager or in college.
Plumbing the richness of myths, folklore, and fairy tales from cultures around the globe, the author plumbs the psyche of the wild woman archetype — her creativity, her wisdom, her battles, her power, and her intuition. Inspiring, thought-provoking, and nurturing. It could do better at expanding the definition of the wild woman to be more inclusive, but as an exploration of a specific Jungian profile, this book entertains and energizes.

Women Who Run With the Wolves is a powerful feminist guided meditation based myth, metaphors, and folklore. It doesn't need to be clinical or scientific to have an impact, and I'm saying that as a scientist. This book was really important to some of my favorite people in my life, and I totally get it.
Not sure about this audio version, as it was only 2h long - it may have been abridged.

rilettura

The audiobook edition is pretty good. I didn't really connect with this but some of the nuggets were interesting. I can't imagine what was cut out of the audiobook, given the size discrepancy. Something about the author's input I did not quite vibe with so I spent a large portion of listening time going 'yeah okay then' and rolling my eyes. Maybe it is the 'man or woman,' 'wild or well behaved,' 'black or white' nature of archetypes that was the issue- given my ongoing presence in a middle space.
