Vashti says she CAN'T draw, but her teacher shows her that everyone can create art. She tells Vashti to make one mark, and see where it takes her. So Vashti makes a dot on a piece of paper, and at her teacher's request, signs it. The next day, Vashti sees that the teacher has framed her dot. This inspires her to try to drawn an even better dot, which sends her on an artistic journey which, by the end, inspires another child who thinks he can't draw to do the same.
This book is beautifully illustrated and extremely inspirational without being the least bit preachy. Peter H. Reynolds shows children that they can all be artists, that art is about more than realistic drawings or technical drawing skills.
The colors explode in this book once Vashti starts exploring her creativity. Beginning all in grayscale, the only colors in the entire book are Vashti's drawings and the colorful, hectic cloud that surrounds her and represents her creative mindset. The writing in the book is all Vashti's handwriting (we see a sample of her handwriting when she signs her artwork).
This book would be a fantastic way to help kids be more creative, and would be appropriate for all ages. It could be used to introduce an art project, or used to nudge students toward an art project. The Dot is a beautiful and creative book that provides much needed perspective for children on what art is!

A very short book I discovered on Ali Wong's Goodreads summer reads list of recommendations. It is found in the Juvenile section of the library. What a great place for it! The story contains a message that kids are never to young to hear.
It is a story about talking yourself into believing you can not do something until one day, one wise individual shows you that you can.
Speaking of dots, there is a little surprise to this book that is quite appropriate for young kids you have a reason to believe they can't do something.

Loved this book and the encouragement it gives, to explore your artistic side and just start with a dot. Loved it.
