heavily centered on the white male experience, but beyond that this book has a lot of wisdom and beauty in it. it was lovely to flip through pages containing so much queer love and revolution. it did get a bit too abstract for me in some places but I think a more analytical read + historical research would fill that in for me

this book explores a queer utopic world in a capitalist, patriarchal, homophobic, queerphobic society at the beginning of the "third revolutions" - the collapse of capitalism & the patriarchy. it discusses different methods of action & revolution that can create the world we want to live in.

in the author's note at the end, larry mitchell writes that he originally intended this to be a children's book, and that showed through in the writing style (in the best way possible) with this being simply written and easy to read while still discussing important topics. i also appreciated the preface & introduction at the beginning (not included in the original but added in the 2019 edition i read) because it gave me context about queer communes and such that helped me better understand the story.

the format of this also made it easy to read, because there are drawings on almost every other page and the formatting of the text makes it easy to read just a couple pages at a time or read a whole bunch at once.

highly recommend giving this a read but just be aware that there are lots of descriptions of sexual content scattered throughout.

I really enjoyed this mostly because I have never read anything like it. It kind of transcends genre because it is part fable and part manifesto, but also somehow reminds me of a queer communist version of Animal Farm. My one complaint is that I don't feel like too much happened plot-wise, it was kind of an expression of ideas and world-building for 100 pages. I wish this world had been expanded on to create more fleshed out characters and conflicts within the beautiful world that Mitchell created.

This book helps to illustrate the experience of being a queer man and still feels very relevant 50 years after it was first published

a perspective we often don't get to talk about since it's not appealing to those outside the community
