I think this may be my favorite of the Anne sequels, certainly my favorite of the ones about Anne's children's. It's definitely more sombre than some of the others in the series, but since it takes place in WWI that is to be expected. I really loved the characters and definitely cried in a few places. A fitting end to the Anne books, I think.

Wow. I loved this book. It was a great end to the series, going through the duration of World War I from the "home front" in Canada. It made me cry.

I loved the perspective of rilla and was so excited to read her story. How beautiful to keep the imagination during the worst war that these people ever saw. Seeing a teenage perspective of World War 1 was my favorite.

I cried many times within this book.
Rilla is an enjoyable character to read with her behaviors and the choices she makes. It is incredibly emotional and bittersweet to see Anne's family endure the war together. The relationships are one of the main drives of this book and also one of the biggest reasons as to why this novel is so emotional.
I really enjoyed this sequel. (The previous book strayed too far for me-having been more of a side story then a sequel. This book seemed to fit more snugly into the fold of Anne's life as she progressed into middle age with her family)

This book can be read on its own, but it is the 8th book in the Anne series - and in my opinion it might be the very best! It follows Anne's daughter Rilla from age 14-19, during the years of the first World War, during which many sad and hopeful and dreadful and happy things occur. I can honestly say it's one of the best books I have ever read! And it made me feel a LOT of emotions so be prepared when you read it (good ones too!) In troublesome times, this book can help to keep faith "for it must be lived for as well as died for" ♡
