The library loan ran out somewhere along the 80% mark. Didn't bother to renew.

I was worried that I was going to get more annoyed with the sci-fi cliches moving into the second book, and had kinda decided I'd throw in the towel if I wasn't impressed, but this book did impress me. It's still not earth-shattering sci-fi, or even military sci-fi, or even alternate history, but the storyline does have unexpected twists, and has a heroic, yet authentic, feel to it. I'm enjoying it less than the Lost Fleet series I read recently by Jack Campbell (to which I keep mentally comparing it), but I am enjoying it nonetheless, and I'll give book 3 a try sometime.

Holy cow, what an adventure! I gave the first book in the series a bit of a hard time for being a little slow and one dimensional, but book 2 fires out of the gates like a rocket and doesn’t slow down until the epilogue. The battles are fantastic and the stakes always feel desperate and heart-pounding.

The plot and characters are anything but one-dimensional this time around. We get a much better understanding of the bad guys and their motives, and we realize that not all of the good guys are “good” guys. There’s a ton of depth to the characters, their motives, and their often heart-wrenching decisions.

A book about WWII soldiers getting sucked into a parallel universe full of dinosaurs and giant lemurs has no right being this good, but holy cow, it’s really stinking good.

The writing in this book is still a bit too disjointed to be able to get fully into it, and it's hard to follow all of the characters at times, but overall, it was better, in my opinion, than the first book. Yes, the first book had casualties, but his book felt like it really had high stakes. As much as I hate to admit it, I'm kind of excited to start the next book.

Now two books in I think it is safe to say this will be one of the top 5 series I ever read. Total dark horse. Excellent plot ideas. Larger danger is around every corner. No character is safe from plot armor. Can't wait to see where this all goes.

An excellent continuation of the series. This is where the books started feeling really well-plotted and Anderson decided to flesh out the world and the various people and critters in it.

A strong sequel. So far, the potential for scope- and power-creep is being kept in check. Looking forward to the next book.
