I didn't have a bad time, but I wouldn't recommend this one to someone who didn't already have nostalgic warm fuzzies for the series. You can tell it's late in the series, and more ingenuity goes into causing problems for Freddy than getting him out of them. And it's weird to read the word "communism" in a Freddy book. The earlier, generally stronger WWII era books addressed The War and abstract patriotism, but nobody punched Nazis. (Now I would like to read about Mrs. Wiggins headbutting a nazi, but that's a me problem.) And, uh, while this series usually has the minimum possible old-timey racism, it's much more frequent than usual in this one. All around not one of the greats.
