realized i never did a write up on this series--5/5 for the whole thing.

it's absolutely heartbreaking. to the point where i'm sure the author specifically set out to make the story hurt as much as possible in the sadistic way that only creative people can achieve. which, if i stand back from the story completely, makes the awful moments darkly hilarious in their self-aware cruelty.

i think the last arc gets kind of knotty and unwieldy with the lore dumping, but otherwise the series is tightly/perfectly paced. characters are all well written, complex, interesting.

This first arc really wraps up nicely and delivers on its reveals and resolutions. Pochita is Denji’s own, personal Jesus.

END OF PART 1 BB!!!! IM SO HYPE FOR PART 2 WHENEVER IT COMES OUT LETS GO
challenging dark emotional funny hopeful sad tense medium-paced

And so ends Part One (squeeeeeeeee!) of Chainsaw Man: modern Shonen's bravest series. I am quite ill at the moment, which means that any attempt at a thorough analysis is likely to end with me dribbling snot over the keyboard, so instead let today's review stand as a round of applause for this minor masterpiece of a series.

As is par for the course for later-volume Chainsaw Man, there are a handful of bits I'll cop to not quiiiite understanding (not sure I followed what happened with Pochita during that final fight there, Bub), but the emotional throughline is so strong it barely dinted the flow of reading. This is a warped, bittersweet ending for Denji - at least for now - but even in spite of a lingering Part 2 on the horizon, Volume 11 feels like a satisfying culmination. Got to say: as someone who has barely mentioned Power in these reviews, I was shocked at how thrilling and touching her scenes were.

So, despite what my oddly grouchy original review of Volume 10 may have indicated, I am very much looking forward to seeing what Fujimoto cooks up next. With this single series he's proved to be an awe-inspiring new force in style and storytelling - a writer as reflective as he is deranged. Whenever you're ready, Fujimoto, I'll be there for Part 2. After all...

"...Denji's my buddy!"
-Power

So I am totally blown away and reeling from how powerfully moving this final volume of the Public Safety Arc was. Denji's gamble on Makima only ever seeing Chainsaw Man and not him, was a cool way to show Denji's growth from the affection starved youth he had been. I also loved that the reason Pochita/Chainsaw Devil had been seeking Denji out was ultimately to make his dream of being hugged come true. The way this volume wrapped things up with Makima as being a devil who wanted to find companionship on an equal level was moving, and I like that the answer was to give hugs. Hugs all around! I was extremely satisfied with how this all went, and also rather grossed out by Denji's eating of Makima. This balance of absurd grotesqueness and quiet character moments made this volume stand out. I mean all the volumes have stood out, especially in this latter half of the story. The fight against Makima at the end was simply rad as all heck, and kind of goofy as limbs went shooting all over the place. I couldn't have asked for a better ending to this stretch of the series.
