The only thing this book has going for it was that it was a quick read.

I'm too angry at this book to discuss all the many, many reasons why I hated it right now. BRB.

4 HOURS LATER:

Okay, I don't really even know where to begin with this book. I guess we can start with the one (and a half) thing that I liked about this book. I read this book super quickly (less than 24 hours), which is something that rarely ever happens to me because I'm typically a very slow reader. The other thing that I partially enjoyed was the slam poetry. I like that Hoover was willing to tackle a topic/hobby/interest that wasn't reading; however, I don't think it worked that well. Slam poetry isn't average poetry. It isn't meant to be read, it's meant to be seen and heard, which is something that Hoover even mentions within the book. So reading poems with italicized and bold words does slightly help to get how it would have been read aloud, but it still doesn't transfer properly to a page.

Now, onto everything else that I didn't like. Other than the relationship and the characters, the writing is careless. It's very I did thing A, and then thing B happened. There's not a lot to go on. (Although a part of me is glad I didn't have to read a weirdly descriptive sex scene.) The first half of the book is ridden with reckless and obvious foreshadowing. Her mother is written horribly to say it lightly.

Lake, who is "not like other girls" and "a hypocrite to the entire feminist movement" and someone who has "turned into a girl who swoons over a guy", could be described as plain, or vanilla. However, I feel like that's an insult to the flavor of vanilla because there are actually people that seek out vanilla. In addition, she's annoying, entitled, and a brat. A very, very big brat.

The relationship, which is the main plot (?) of this novel, is the main thing that I had a problem with. FIRST OFF
SpoilerWILL IS HER FUCKING TEACHER.
(Which I don't even think should BE a spoiler.)
SpoilerThis creates not only a fucked-up power dynamic between the two, but also glorifies student-teacher relationships. Lake doesn't seem to grasp that this is a situation that--yes, is not directly anyone's fault--could determine the rest of Will's life. She's not underage, so he couldn't technically go jail; however, he would probably get kicked out of his university's education program and never be able to teach anywhere, at least in the state of Michigan, probably ever.
Aside from that very major issue, Will pretty much treats Lake like shit emotionally. The amount of times he forcefully grabs her or reaches down the back of her shirt after knowing her about 24 hours without asking is quite frankly alarming. He is trying to make her understand
Spoilerthat he could lose his job if their relationship continued
; however, he doesn't go about it the correct way. He forcefully orders and pushes her around, and I just don't understand how that would be okay with anyone, let alone in this situation.

AND andandandandand BEFORE the above "spoiler" is given, the pair go on a "date", which is is quotes, because and I quote: "'Great! It's a date then. I'll pick you up at seven thirty.' He immediately turns and heads towards his house when I realize he never actually asked, and I never actually agreed." Next page: [this is Lake talking to her mom:] "Honestly, I'm not sure what we're doing. I really never even agreed to the date."

*this is by no means a comprehensive list, but I am tired and angry. goodnight.
challenging emotional hopeful medium-paced

I heard a lot about Colleen Hoover, so I thought it was going to be amazing but I did not love it. The book was filled with great characters but I just could not get enthralled with the entire storyline.

let me start by saying: colleen hoover is my absolute favorite author & she can do NO WRONG in my eyes. I rate her books on a scale of their own, because they are that good.

layken - the MC in this book was the most unlikeable main character I have ever read in a book. she was so whiny & so cringey & SO rude to her mom. I couldn’t handle it. was I that bad in high school???? (probably lol)

will - I loved him. a man written by colleen hoover is a perfect man. his only fault was loving layken.

eddie & julia were by far my favorite characters.
eddie was the perfect best friend. the best supporting character with so much depth.
julia reminded me of my mom. so much patience. I have no idea how anyone deals with having a teenage daughter (aka spawns of satan)

overall this was a good book & it was an easy read. I liked it, I’ll read the next book in the series - just not my favorite coho book. reading about high schoolers gives me really bad second hand embarrassment lol.

I went into this blind and..well
First of all, the twist was weird. Wasn’t a fan of the student x teacher thing. Second, why did there have to be an assault scene? It was really uncomfortable to read. And he only punched the assaulter because he was “jealous”...? Okay then.
Layken was very “im not like other girls”
And they were so attached after knowing each other for a week...like its a week move on you’ll meet someone else.
I liked Eddie, the mother and Kel. They brang it up to a two.
Overall, shitty but not the shittiest.

This was cheesy and cliche, but it made me FEEL THINGS.

More like a 2.5. I'm just really frustrated that I love her writing style but after reading Slammed and Confess, I don't like her books.

Any book that involves The Avett Brothers just can't go wrong!

I'm so thankful for my friend who bought this book and knows me well enough to know that The Avetts are my favorite band.

It was so much fun to see each new lyric and how it related to its corresponding chapter.

Soon I hope to have read the next book in the series!!!
