Not my favorite. It wasn't bad but I definitely felt like i was racing for it to be over. The timeline just felt like it wasnt adding up, Idid not like the male MC at all, and the Slam poetry aspect felt so forced. 50/50 if I'll read the sequel
"I got schooled this year
by
a
Boy.
a boy that I'm seriously,
deeply, madly, incredibly,
and undeniably in love
with.
And he taught me the most
important thing of all ...
To put the emphasis
On life."
I love this book so much, but oh my goodness... all the loss and back and forth completely broke my heart. I loved Lake's depth and how Colleen Hoover was able to show her maturity without making it unbelievable, especially with how much Lake had just walked through. I absolutely adore Will and was rooting for him even as he was breaking Lake's heart. I also went into this book not knowing this was CoHo's first novel, and while you can see how much she has grown in her writing, this book was great!

Okay, I am finally ready to talk about this novel! I have said it before and I will say it again - Colleen Hoover has the ability to not only make you feel all the feels, but also kick you in the teeth with cliffhangers and emotions! As per usual - this novel was NO different! It was clear from the beginning that Layken was not only greiving the loss of her father, but also being a teenager just dealing with life in general as a senior in high school is enough without all the other baggage. What I did appreciate about this character is that she was not the self-loathing teenager we often see in YA novels. For the most part, Layken is pretty confident in who she is as she navigates her move from Texas to Michigan and meeting Will. I just really appreciate how her character was written and I felt her feelings were always justified as her life continuously changed throughout this story.
Ok - we can talk about Will now! I loved everything about Will! He was noble, loving, caring and just overall a wonderful person to come into Layken's life when he did. My only issue with Will - was how he handled his relationship with Layken when he found out she was in high school. I understand the shock and the concern, but there were a few moments where I questioned his behavior - though I think Ms. Hoover did this on purpose to also show that while Will was mature for his age - its still young at the age of 21.
Overall - I loved everything about this book! What I loved most is that there was a romantic element of the book, but I didn't feel like it overpowered the overall story. This story spoke to me as being more about changes in life and how to cope with them. Also - how important it is to have a support system during these times of change. Having someone there to let you cry, to be a voice of reason and to just know that someone cares about your well-being when you are going through a hard time. Another amazing novel by Colleen Hoover and I am excited to read the sequels next!!!

Slammed is the first book by Colleen Hoover that I have read and I absolutely loved it. It starts out with the tragic loss of Lake's father and her family's move from Texas to Michigan. Why would anyone want to move to Michigan just before winter? This is exactly how Lake felt, but her mother found a better job in Michigan and they needed the money.
Lake's younger brother quickly becomes best friends with the boy across the street, who is the younger brother of Will Cooper. Lake and Will are a few years apart in age, but there is an immediate attraction between the two. Will introduces her to Slam Poetry, which I had no idea existed prior to reading this book. I loved seeing how each of the characters expressed their thoughts, feelings, and emotions through this performing art. I was so intrigued with the idea of slam poetry that I found a place not far from my home that hosts a slam every Wednesday. I can't wait to attend, but I have no intention of ever performing.
Several of the characters in this book have been dealt a difficult hand in life, but they all seem to grow and make the most of their situations. I'm sure everyone who reads this book will fall in love with Will Cooper, but it has nothing to do with his good looks and charm. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this is not a stand alone book. There are two additional books in this series, which have already been released!! I've already requested Point of Retreat and look forward to reading it soon!

Slammed is a beautiful story of a young couple in love infused with a good amount of poetry!
Layken is a sensible girl - well most of the times. Will cooper on the other hand is a caring guy. Both have suffered huge losses and it helps them in a way that is so beautiful.
Heart breaking moments, romance, drama - this book has it all.

Factors:
Driving on a roadtrip.
I also feel like CoHo needs her books read in publication order.
Results:
Ugh.
Pros: A brain dead boggart could read this.
Cons: The worst “slam poetry” I’ve heard,
Intamacy of an 18 year old makes me cringe. I’m an adult I don’t want to hear or read about it.
The Big C just jarringly coming into the story
The Insta-Love that she claims isn’t infatuation but then BAM! Says she loves him upon seeing him at his job that makes no sense. I thought an Aide meant there was an actual teacher in the classroom. Again, I listened on audiobook so some deets could be wrong but I remember this thought going through my head so I’ll let it be.
He wants nothing to do with her and then having the audacity to tell her mother that she needs him right now. Son, get fucked.
I also vaguely remember her saying she never wants to talk to her mother again immediately after finding out about the big C. Um, Laken that makes you the big C.
I probably wouldn’t recommend this to anyone over 21.
Although I will be continuing on because I want to read CoHos books in pub order. Que Sera Sera.
