I think the plot and existential questions of old age, purpose, family and queerness and conformity proposed were really good. Unfortunately I dont think the structure and prose was as strong as such a storyline had the potential to be and the though processes could have been so much more powerful if expanded slightly more. The honesty and rawness with which age and physical/mental decline was discussed was both bleak and refreshing though. And the protagonists flaws were  themselves, in their existence, a fresh perspective in contemporary literature which tends to assume progressive leads as a given.

This book was a great insight into a more conservative culture / point of view. I loved reading it, it enriches the experience of the reader since it is written by a Korean author and translated into English by a queer woman.

Die Sprache dieses Buches ist zurückgeschraubt und trotzdem oder vielleicht gerade deswegen werden die Emotionen, Gedanken und Ängste der Mutter sehr authentisch den Lesenden vermittelt. Die Geschichte hat mich nicht so ganz gepackt, da ich mich mit der Mutter nicht gut identifizieren konnte. Ich fand es aber trotzdem durchaus sehr interessant, in ihre Welt einzutauchen und ihre Sichtweise auf die Welt und die Gesellschaft und die Rolle der Frau kennenzulernen.
