I feel so bad but I really did not enjoy this book. I maybe would have enjoyed it more if it didn’t get so many things about new orleans laughably wrong. I appreciate the author’s research but everything is executed in the wrong way, from the tree lined hospital at the corner of st Charles and canal to the Rex of krewe du vieux.

I really liked this, Sister Holiday was melodramatic but sympathetic and fascinating. I’m glad the author chose a non traditional city for her focus on the story, because New Orleans has so many layers and elements people overlook.

It wasn’t too long, it wasn’t slow burn, it’s well paced and through with story telling so you get to know Sister Holiday, while she trying to figure out the source of the fires. I think this is a way better approach that keeps the story more interesting and readers more invested.
I look forward to more mysteries.

In really wanted to like this book. First, I love who-dun-its and as a queer Catholic school kid a story about a gay nun seemed just so delicious. But unfortunately, all the references to religion seemed extremely heavy handed and sometimes plain wrong, the vivid description of homophobic violence was at times too hard to stomach and I've seen the final plot twist coming from a mile away. On the pro side: I kind of liked the main character and I would have loved to follow her further if the writing wasn't as dense as the overly described New Orleans heat.
