Just as interesting as the first one! Love these books.
After a slightly jokey intro about a lack of unifying theme Superfreakonomics collects a handful of essays on unusual subjects using a perspective of freaky economics.
Chapter one describes the sort of money and issues that surround prostitution, and is a slighly funny chapter, lacks insight worth buying a book for however.
Two, focusses on terrorism and hospital ERs. This chapter is mildly frustrating as when explaining predictors of terrorism, the authors have to keep us in the dark due to issues of national security.
Three, Description of apathy and altruism, blows apart the commonly held ideas of the Kitty Genovese case. Probably the best chapter.
Chatpers Four and Five are vaguely focussed on global warming, and simply solutions to large scale problems. I found this chapter annoying as after claiming the problem with global warming is that people treated the issue to crudely and oversimplified and proceed to not really present a very clear thesis on the subject. The authors seem too busy giving nods to deniers and hassling believers , yet agreeing with believers that it becomes confusing as to what the authors are advocating.
Overall I enjoyed SuperFreakonomics but I wouldn't urge readers to rush out and buy/borrow the book. Just give it a look through when you have some spare time to kill.

This is right up my alley. I love research that is done outside of the box and the results of which are paradigm-changing. I hope they make another book together.
I've written a long review about this book on my Blog in Portuguese.
It was OK. Not as good, engaging or persuasive as the first book. It squeaks a 3* from me.

It had to happen at some point didn't it? I made the (quite stupid decision really) to read much more non-fiction since I knew nothing about that whole side of literature. So where to start? Obviously the Freakonomics series is what is going to be recommended to any non-fiction virgin so I dived straight in with.....wait, what? This is the second one?!?
Soooo, once again I've read the second before the first. This can't become a habit! It's doing my head in just thinking about what I've missed and beware this book references the first. Just in case you thought you could get away without reading the first one, you can-ish. I suggest reading the first first though. That's where you generally start. Unlike me. Idiot of the week.
Moving swiftly on. You cannot help but be captivated by this book, it's style and content are both interesting and relevant to the modern reader. Not only that but it makes an area of economics disgestible to someone who has never studied it and therefore knows barely anything. This, for me is the best part of it and what it does the best.
It's ideas and information about the economics which surround prostitution were particularly interesting to me since I've read Belle de Jour quite recently. This book let me compare her life between that of the average American prostitue and needless to say, she's been living a charmed life compared to many others in her profession. The statistics are factual and real whilst being intrriguing and represented in such a way that's new and refreshing.
Therefore I may, perhaps have been converted to the non-fiction world........and it's all down to a little freakonomics.
