Another story about everybody except Drizzt.

A classic Drizzt tale by Salvatore, being an intriguing tale that keeps you wanting to finish the book in one go. As usual, Charon's Claw comes complete with descriptive and elaborate combat sequences worthy of any fantasy novel, but also with introspective insight from Drizzt's point of view. Salvatore's grasp of the balance between character development and a gallivanting plot is masterful as always. This Neverwinter Saga resets the setting after the Transitions Series and so leaves an element of rediscovery for the reader. All in all, a fun read as expected.

The 22nd book of the Drizzt series? Wow...hard to believe. But, the books continue to come on strong and this one was no exception.

Just cause I rated this 2 stars doesn't mean I didn't like it - it was a fun beach read that I have no desire to revisit. A few moments even came close to being moving, when bitter hardened warriors weep together about their past traumas. Sounds like sarcasm but that's high praise for a summer read! Come for the swords-and-sorcery, stay for the cathartic head-bashing-in of a vile rapist.

Probably one of the best of the Drizzt books by and large.

Salvatore does it again, bringing another chapter of Drizzt's story to life. The writing, as always, is magical. However, this book took me a while to finish as the pent-up aggression that Drizzt showed throughout the story drew away from how great his character is.

Regardless, I've loved this character and I will continue to do so. Write me some crap for once, Salvatore, and I'll read it with a grin on my face.

SpoilerLet's start with what I didn't like: Dahlia. Dahlia is a hard character to process. She's raw, she's aggressive, and she runs counter to Drizzt, the character who I know and love. She is frustrating because she represents the emotions and impulses that Drizzt fights against in others, yet she flaunts them and enjoys seeing Drizzt squirm.

With that out of the way, how was the rest of the book? In one word: excellent. The entire book is a spring with tension constantly building as Drizzt, Dahlia and Artemis work their way to Gauntlgrym to destroy Charon's Claw, both freeing and killing Artemis from his enslavement to the sword. The whole time everyone knows he's going to die, yet the trudge forward, remaining quiet about Artemis's impending death. If this alone was the story, it would be good, but the way Salvatore then twists in the fates of the dark elves and finally reveals the relationship between Alegni, Dahlia, and Effron, was absolutely fantastic.

If you're a fan of the series, then you've either already read this book or your planning on it. If you haven't read this series, then this is not the best place to start, but know that the series is a long haul and one worth the time.
