Oh my freaking faex!

I cannot express how much I absolutely loved this series. Jax has everything going against so many times, few people supporting her, and she's extremely destitute. She had a major childhood trauma and even with that she's honest, caring, and bends over backwards to help her clients. What's an overwhelmed wizard supposed to do when the world is ending before her eyes? Fight to save it of course. This series also has hilarious cussing in Latin, which I did verify with an online search and plan to use myself!

Average rating of 3.5 stars for this enjoyable, action packed series

Book 1
======
3 stars
Good fun and I enjoyed the various characters. I do wonder if Jax could ever die. She seems to roll from one fight to the death battle to another, often more than one in a day, managing somehow to recover her strength without rest or sustenance (mostly). This is very action packed and there was a bit of a lover's twist which surprised me to tie some things together. Also why can't I have a housekeeper ghost?

Book 2
=======
4 stars
Really enjoyed this second book in the series. There were fewer battles and more adventures. The pace is as frantic as ever and I'm starting to get really curious about Darick and Lysander. Ends on a bit of a cliffhanger so I'm glad I already own book 3!

Book 3
=======
3.5 stars

I am motoring through this series. There is so much going on that each chapter flies by. A whole book later and then I realise we still don't know what Darick was about to confess at the end of book 2. I guess I'll just have to keep reading. And that last scene at the church definitely had a girl-power-super-hero-team feel about it :-)

Book 4
=======
3.5 stars
Lots of action and activity although the broader plot didn't really develop much further. Still enjoyable.

Book 5
======
3.5 stars

More action and adventure and no closer to the source of the mystery. Who's really behind everything and what is so special about Jax?

Book 6
======
3 stars
It was a fun and almost happy ending to the series but somehow I can't shake the feeling that I was expecting something a little bit more. I also was getting a bit weary of the recaps of the series that kept popping up. I probably would've been grateful for these if I'd had longer gaps between books though.

The authors pull you into their world of magic, vampires, witches, goblins and many more creatures. I couldn't put the series down and lost some sleep in the process. The ending was worth it!

Gritty, punchy, fast-paced and modern. If Jessica Jones crossed over into the Bright universe and it was set in Johannesburg, you'd get Blood Magic.

Although I'm a huge fan of JT Lawrence, especially her Sticky Fingers short story anthologies, this series wasn't really my cup of tea. Fans of the genre will enjoy it.

Loads of action, but a lone-wolf heroine so very little emotional connection.

Interesting world building, big problems with pacing and character arcs
Have you ever read a book series that was enticing enough for you to read the whole thing, engaging enough for you to find yourself invested in some of the characters... but really frustrating when it came to how these characters end up? For me, Blood Magic was that kind of book series.
My first big problem was pacing: if things keep happening at a breakneck pace ALL THE TIME, it's very difficult to understand what is really important to the story and the characters.
This book series' subplots have subplots and although a decent attempt has been made to tie everything together in the end... there's at least one character that was entirely forgotten amidst all the kerfuffle. Plus, one of the most interesting characters of the book gets such a shoddy treatment that you have to wonder if the writer meant to have him as an important character from the start, or if it kinda happened... but there were no plans on how to land the plane.
And my favorite pet-peeve: spelling discrepancies. Like, if you're gonna use Latin for spells, then make sure the incantation is spelled the same every time...
But you know what? The fact that I cared enough to write this review, the fact that I was annoyed enough about the characters and how they ended up, means that the books work, in a way. The story is compelling and it makes sense it has so many fans. Hell, it would be much more compelling in a movie or TV show format. At least there, we would be able to get a pause between episodes...
