RATING: 3 STARS
2020; William Morrow/HarperCollins
I read Heather Young's debut novel, [b:The Lost Girls|27213253|The Lost Girls|Heather Young|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1460038185l/27213253._SX50_.jpg|46932281] in 2016, and while I enjoyed the writing the story itself was just okay. The synopsis also made it sound more like a mystery than it really was. I was excited to see that Young had a new novel out and was more of a mystery than her last book. Again, I liked the writing and the characters were realistic and well done, but at times the story felt like it dragged and then sped up. I would read Young's next novel as I do enjoy them as I read them, but they aren't books I would read again or even recommend as a must read.
***I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through Edelweiss. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.***

A slow burning story that will keep you haunted for days!
This is not an easy story to read, all the characters have a difficult baggage and secrets hidden from the rest of the world; drugs, abuse, family problems… But even if it’s hard, the story is full of layers of reality, none of the characters had an easy life, even Sal who is just a kid. As you start reading their stories you’ll be unable to stop thinking about them and how wrong is the society we live.
This is a psychological thriller, Adam Merkel’s body, the teacher, has appeared burned, and young boy Sal Prentiss is the one who found the cadaver. What really happened to Adam? And what part took Sal in his death? It will be Nora Wheaton, a friend, that will be the one to start investigating the case, she only wants answers, to know the truth.
The story is told between the different characters; mixing from memories from the characters and the present. This made it sometimes a little difficult to follow the story completely, but without their stories the book would not have been complete.
I really don’t know how to explain how I felt at the end of the story, it’s not a happy book but the ending felt real and in a way, deserved. Unexpected but a way to make things right for everyone. I think this is a book that will make you think and value what you’ve achieved but never forget that you can lose everything with just a bad decision.
Are you ready for “The Distant Dead”?

I received a copy from of The Distant Dead from Harper Collins goodreads giveaway! Thanks so much. I think this has been my favorite giveaway I’ve received. It was fast-paced, interesting, and kept my attention. The ending had me very surprised despite having many theories as to the murderer.
I am one to say that I like police procedural books, but this is not one of them. The story is very character based and has real aspects of resentment and pain throughout. I definitely would recommend!

I enjoyed the author's voice, the plot, the mystery and the characters. The problem was the pacing, it was oftentoo slow for me - I found myself getting bored now and again. Not sure the cause, but I think there was unnecessary details thrown in that didn't add to the story but did slow it down. It wasn't a slog and worthwhile read, but could be improved with a faster pace.
