Coleman Silk is forced to retire from the college he works at when he is deemed a racist. Little does everyone know that Coleman has a secret. The book outlines the struggles he faced during his past and present. The narrator of the story is the local author that is asked to write Coleman Silk's story.
The book was pretty good and if I remember correctly, I think there was a movie made. I plan on checking out the movie. The only downside to this book is some of the conversations that the main characters have with each other. I found myself wondering if people actually talk like that. If they do, then I am hanging out in different social circles than these people.

A tour de force of the human condition, exploring multiple aspects of what makes life dark and fascinating at the same time. One of those books that makes you consider what it is to be an individual and part of society and something that would be perfect for a book group, to inspire a multitude of conversations, unpredictable in that each person would draw something different out.
For the most part, I really like his style. But the super-foreshadowing completely stole any thunder the book had and by about 100 pages shy of the end, you know exactly what will happen. Which is why it took me a month to finish it. Granted, when the twists first happen, it is Very twisty. But that suspense doesn't carry through. Plus, having read the book, 1) I don't understand all the 'this book is so scandalous and crazy' buzz that I heard beforehand, and 2) what the hell, casting Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman in the movie?? what??

A terrific novel, first written to condemn the puritanical zeal of the public's response to the Clinton-Lewinsky relationship, which is revived and re-energized in our current, painfully stupid cancel culture discourse.
You may or may not have sympathy for the novel's protagonist, but one thing seems clear enough: Both the author and his fans should be relieved that we'll never know what Roth thinks about Joe Rogan.
