This was a delightful way to highlight the talents of Mia, Lupe, and Jason. Despite the reality of their situation, this book shows how each of them has grown. With Mia's voice, Kelly Yang illustrates how young people might internalize their feelings.
From taking on narrow-minded views to cultivating a space for themselves, the adults and kids in this story find triumph on their terms. This series a great way to engage young readers and ask them about their experience and how they relate or don't relate to the characters.

Mia Tang is a high-achieving daughter of immigrants. I haven't read all the books in the series, but in this one, Mia is attending journalism camp on a scholarship, her friends have various complications going on, her mom is trying to overcome her language shyness to present at a conference and the 'powers that be' at the journalism camp seem to only be interested in the stories written by those with influential parents. With the help of community, Mia and friends fight back.
