All I can say is, wow.

The good:
This book is extremely thought provoking on the matter of fate and death. I loved the questions it very subtly raised. The characters were both relatable and showed two different ways you might react emotionally and physically if you knew you would die in the next 24 hours. There was a tension throughout the book that was very unique because you already know the way it will end, but as the pages go by you’re more and more tensed for the inevitable ending.

The bad:
I thought the switching between all kinds of characters and past and present tense and 1st and 3rd point of view was confusing and distracting. I would have much preferred if it had stayed between Mateo and Rufus; I feel like the author got sidetracked and tried to make everything intertwined and it really just lost me. The way Matias died was kind of rushed and lame in my opinion because so much time was spent building up to it. Rufus’ death was genius though and took me a second to register.
The other thing I thought was kind of rushed and hard to believe was Rufus and Matias’ romance. It kind of came out of nowhere mid book and felt like a romance for the sake of a romance. I think it would have hit harder if it was obvious they liked each other but they never got to the point of kissing or saying it. It would really have captured regrets and how we don’t always finish business before death.

But! Overall really loved it and if you’re an insane literature analyzer like me it’s a good read.

3.75

3.75 stars may have been an underrated rating but in all reality it isn't. The first thing I would like to address is the fact that the author (Adam Silvera) would introduce new characters and in the same way, starting with “Death cast didn't call *name* because *s/he* isn't dying today” which over time became really repetitive; also they would have their own dedicated chapter to themselves but later on the characters wouldn't be reintroduced; maybe there is a meaning behind it but as I was reading I didn't catch onto it. Another thing that frustrated me is how slow paced their adventure was; also some places they went to were really random in my opinion and were not necessary and because of that they were overextended.
Don't get me wrong the fact that they went from strangers to lovers was cute but it felt really quick, maybe that was the point, maybe Adam was trying to make the ending more sad by making them lovers but it was very surprising because he didn't tell us Mateo and Rufus found attraction in each other when they just met. But I also liked how he introduced other people that had strong connections to Mateo or Rufus because that made the ending sadder.
The last thing I would like to critique is that at the end I didn't realize Rufus died,
I know the fact that Adam said he crosses the street without looking should have been a dead giveaway and maybe I didn't process that quick enough which lead me to reread it but there wasnt enough context; this may seem a bit demented but I love how strong the relationship between Mateo and Rufus was, because that made Rufus walk into that street after processing that Mateo was really dead.

This book is about a world where there is a service that tells you that you will die the day you die, you don't know how you die, or when but you know you die today. Two 18 year olds, Rufus and Mateo have gotten the call and become deckers, people who are going to die that day. They meet up on an app called Last Friend, and everything goes from there.

This book was beautiful. I loved it so much, I started reading this a while back before I got into reading as much as I have now and I can't believe I didn't like this at first. This book is amazing, their romance is amazingly written and it makes it seem like they've known each other for much longer than the one day they spend together. It was heartbreaking when they die. At the beginning you think you'll be able to prepare yourself but you can't. The way their development is written and their friendship that turns slowly romantic draws you in quite frankly immediately. They're both incredibly loveable and all the side characters are just as loveable. Some of the subplots felt a little random at first, but they do end up connecting all of these characters had depth to them immediately. I fell in love with the Pluto Solar System and if you haven't you will too. This book will have you sobbing, and it is definitely worth it.

I finished this book and the first words out of my mouth where "You can't end it like that, not like that." And dead ass teary eyed like I am not a crying reader this happens once every 20-30 books, but how dare Adam Silvara end this book like that. I even knew it was going to happen. The damn book title says so, and yet I was in denial.

Every single person in this book is connected, and it shows how acts of kindness affect others and how the best way to be kind is to have no expectations for returns.

The other message is to live event day like there is no tomorrow and find joy in small things.
