I absolutely loved the humor in this book (esp the dark flavored variety). It was sewn in well to help break up the emotional stuff (and was very much appreciated). Here’s an example that made me cackle:

This brunette girl, mad pretty, is bawling when a guy advances on her with some tired-ass pickup line (“Maybe you’ll live to see another day with some Vitamin Me in your system.”)

As a person with a monster truck of anxiety, I very much related to Matteo. Most of the passages I highlighted to save are from his POV. I enjoyed watching him as the story progressed.

The only complaint I can think of is my disappointment that Final Destination was not mentioned ONCE during this entire book, when it had been set up so perfectly so many times. But as I was writing this I had the panicky thought that kids today might not even know what that movie is, which is horrifying

I know there’s a prequel that came after this, and just discovered there’s a book 2 coming out next year. I obviously don’t know what happens in those so I don’t know if this gets answered, but I want another book to come out where you find out there’s some big nefarious conspiracy to how Death-Cast got started, and how people deal with finding it out/having to get it shut down/something like that. Buuut that’s my love of ominous horror/thrillers bleeding into this world lol

Honestly, this was an unfortunately sad read (it was obvious but still). It took some time for me to actually get into the book. It was a bit dragged in the beginning but slowly got interesting and started picking up some pace. The concept and premise of the book were intriguing and I was hooked -The friendships, the writing, the description, the love that blossomed, the philosophy, thoughts oh Good Lord. Everything was amazingly written. The little chapters of side characters being intertwined into Mateo and Rufus' Last Day were beautiful, sort of like a movie where you could see the characters (though not so important) being affected directly or indirectly by them.

Even though it was evident they both would die at the end (the whole point of the title) I still hoped against everything they both would live. There weren't any plot twists per se but the build-up, and the storyline was 'close-the-book-for-a-while-and-breathe' worthy. Overall a good book to read.

Me with only about thirty pages left: “Oh maybe this book won’t make me cry.”

Me not even ten or so pages later: *balling my eyes out for the rest of the book*

READ THIS BOOK. DO IT. Of course if constant mentions of death is triggering for you, then don’t read it.  I keep thinking about the book and just want to cry 😭

I would have preferred the main characters to stay as friends. I didn't find the romance to be convincing and it felt a bit empty and cliche. I also don't understand what happened to Delilah. I'm assuming she died(?) and I guess that sets up the reader for the next book in the series. I was sad about Mateo and Rufus(?) dying.

A really interesting book. I love the concept, but I do think it could have used a bit more editing to polish it. I have the collector’s edition, where it’s clear that Rufus’ parts were added in after the first draft and unfortunately this shows. Also, ate being so good and yet so anxious - I feel like this was done really heavily, we weren’t really given any reason for it so it felt kind of forced.

I would have liked to have closure for other characters such as Delilah. I really liked how you couldn’t tell how they died until it happened - there were lots of possibilities which kept you guessing. I also enjoyed how everyone was so interconnected even if they didn’t realize it.
