This isn't a bad book, it just didn't work for me. The art is very pretty, but I wasn't all that enamored of the story, which I felt didn't really come together, and I never entirely clicked with the characters, though I did like Bardov.

A nice little fantasy story with fun characters, great worldbuilding, and amazing art. Also the Ancient language is esperanto, the story is way more enjoyable imo if you google translate the Ancient dialouge.

Art: The art is cartoony but is really expressive and well done. It's super clean too. I think the art is the book's strong point. It's pretty animation quality, the panels feel like they're moving and not stiff. I love pretty much everything about the art.

Characters: The characters aren't too fleshed out, but they work really well and play off each other brilliantly. Nathan and Bardov grew on me by the end, and Sina and Haven are just perfect. They're both so expressive and fun to read. The MC, Nathan is also a pretty good fantasy protagonist, as he grows as the story goes on- nothing too revolutionary but he works pretty well.

Story: The story is pretty good, it's helped by its amazing and fun worldbuilding. It took a while for me to get into the story however. It is a really good quest story though. The first book is pretty long, but it keeps you hooked with its mysteries and magic.

My final thoughts: I think the story can drag a bit, due to it's length. But the characters and art kept me coming back. The characters aren't too fleshed out yet, but they still work brillianty together like I said.

Yes, I did absolutely devour this in a night. And yes, I would have read it even faster had I known it was a webcomic, but I'm so glad I had never heard of it before now. The art is amazing, and the colours are so vivid, something I wasn't expecting. I had flipped through it before buying, but I didn't notice how consistent it was the entire time. This is just a beautiful novel, and I'd recommend it just for the art alone.

The story, however, is what brings you in. There's the tiny bits of fourth wall breaking and the meta-humour that comes from being a webcomic, but the characters are the best part of any long format like this. Nathan fits that reluctant protagonist role so well, and I'm a huge fan of Haven, Sina, and Bardou. We've got the stereotypical D&D party vibe here and I'm in love with it so much. I had heard nothing about this going into it, and wasn't sure if there would be a second book, but now that I know there's going to be more than one it makes me even happier to have grown so attached to these characters.

Incorporating not only other languages, but a non-binary character early on is something I never expected, and I'm all for it. This one is one to keep on the radar, and I think it's one of my new faves.

A great start to an adventure filled series!! The ordinary, wannabe bard Nathan turns out to be the only human to ever have magic! He becomes friends with some bounty hunters who are shapeshifters. In this world, shapeshifters, or volken, and humans do not get along. But Nathan could be the key to bringing peace to their world called Nothing.

This is full of charm and witty jokes and the art feels like an animated Disney movie. This would make a fantastic movie! Highly recommend for middle graders and up! I’m looking forward to book 2!
