3.5/5 ⭐️

I preface by saying I received a copy of this graphic novel from a giveaway on Goodreads.

I read the original novel in high school and its story has stuck with me over the years. Of course, I may have forgotten some parts but the overall plot and feel of the story have stuck around. This graphic novel adaptation gives that same desperation for finding something, anything, that brings hope to what a person is going through. My only con is that it is very one-note. But that’s similar to the original that I remember so please take that with a grain of salt.

It does have pain and suffering right there on the page that McCarthy and Larcenet do not shy away from. If you are looking for a great visualization of a dystopian story, this is for you. If you don’t want to see pain, suffering, survival, and emotional turmoil right in front of you, maybe put this one to the back burner until you have the emotional bandwidth for it.

Beautifully rendered artwork propels this dark and emotional story.

Incredible, gut wrenching, darkly disturbing illustrations by Larcenet only enhance McCarthy’s original written work.

You’re planted in a dystopian hellscape alongside a father and son as they fight to survive amidst destruction and horrors. I was deeply affected by the book and movie adaption years ago, and this graphic novel viscerally brought back those memories while evoking new emotions as well. I felt despair, but I also held out hope for “the good guys” that seem so few and far between.

Holding this book in my hands, with the quality paper and large pages of detailed artwork was an experience in itself- highly recommend getting your hands on a physical copy!
