I genuinely did enjoy this book! I bought it at 4 PM and read it that afternoon. The premise of the late-night comedy show was really compelling, and I liked the timeline and fast-paced structure. However,
the initial portion where the plot was contained within Noah’s week hosting TNO was my favorite part of the book. Unfortunately, the COVID email element slowed the momentum significantly for me (even though I acknowledge that it was super relatable and definitely intentional). This interruption made the climax have less effect for me—Sally could have had the same growth outside of COVID, I think.
I did like the realistic struggle of Sally’s insecurity and self-sabotage, even if the book was a little too self-aware at times. It’s about a writer and called romantic comedy, after all. Overall, a good time!

charming! even though some of dialogue teeters on cringe and the BLM/racism mentions, and Curtis sittenfeld writes about white women for white women, maybe I love her writing so much due to her being one of my childhood favorites.
It just occurred to me that none of the second half of the book (about the pandemic) could’ve been published during the pandemic. Millions are dying and we’re reading about private jets and concierge doctors? wow

I read somewhere once that you give a 5 star review to the book that feels like it was written for you. There's so much here that spoke to me personally, and Sittenfield captured this story and all of its nuance and conflict and uncomfiness in such a human and beautiful way. I think I'll return to this one for sure.

Absolutely devoured this in just a few hours. What a perfect, delightful read. Our heroine is frustratingly insecure about her own loveability, but her arc is so satisfying. And every man who loves a woman should be as wonderful as Noah.

Content warning for the pandemic/lockdown!

Interesting premise - disappointing execution. There are a few annoying tropes (insta love, miscommunication, and a perfect love interest who ever makes the wrong move) and particular disappointments (the attempt to be politically correct without any self-awareness). But on the whole, it’s just disappointing. I can’t say there’s any of the growth you expect, nor can I say the romance was particularly gratifying when it’s just awkward until the very end. Realistic, maybe, but frustrating, definitely. The final pages made me happy, but I almost DNFed the book multiple times. I wish this had been just a little bit different because it had potential.
For me, COVID is also a trigger, so the explicit illness was too almost much.

Very good example of a Romantic Comedy.  Sweet and funny.  Three distinct parts each one digging deeper.  Excellent audiobook.
