James Baldwin’s work is truly genius and a testament to his transcendent heart. I appreciated this even more because I recently read The Three Mothers which provided insight into his mother and James’ life growing up. The Fire Next Time is just so incredible… Baldwin is one of my all-time favorite writers.

The ease with which such a short book can so deeply implore its readers to rethink the American racial hierarchy is amazing.

In these essays, James Baldwin effectively conveys an analysis of how Black people have been made to feel inferior in the U.S. and the seemingly impossible feats to overcome the superiority complex white people have built for themselves. He manages to eloquently call out religion, and discusses what it means to be virtuous and powerful as a race. I loved his writing.

Still relevant today

James Baldwin was a man before his time. Everything that was written in this book is still relevant today. If you are curious about race relations and struggles, this book is a must read for you. Read even if that doesn't interest you because I guarantee you'll still take something away from it.

Baldwin is a brilliant author- he writes about total liberation with a love & conviction we can all hope to one day achieve ourselves. A perfect read for Black History Month :)

I actually listened to this one on CD, but that does not discount the beauty of this book. This short book (I own an actual hard copy of it and its only 100 or so pages long) includes two autobiographical essays about civil rights, human dignity, and the black experience. James Baldwin is a genius and master storyteller. He can argue a point just as well as Martin Luther King Jr. and tell a tale as well as Ralph Ellison. Although written in during the civil rights era, the topics it covers are still pertinent today. A superb, accessible, thoughtful, and inspirational read.
