"A bill is coming in that I fear America is not prepared to pay....
If we--and now I mean the relatively conscious whites and the relatively conscious black, who must, like lovers, insist on, or create, the consciousness of others--do not falter in our duty now, we may be able, handful that we are, to end the racial nightmare, and achieve our country, and change the history of the world."

an absolutely brilliant, thoughtful, eloquent roast of white people. reading books like this puts things into perspective for me in the political hellscape we live in today - minorities have been experiencing this for centuries longer than i have and they have persisted.

Wow! So much is packed into 106 pages. I will need to likely reread these two letters over & over to truly grasp all the layers of what Baldwin is trying to communicate. Highly recommend. He touches on systemic racism & it affects on the psyche of black people & white people. He discusses religion and he discusses ways that we can try to heal as a nation & become unified. Like I said, I will need to reread it a few times to fully get all the nuances.

Baldwin’s analysis of racial conditions in the 60s is still relevant today. I think you could slap someone else’s name on this and, if they weren’t familiar with Baldwin’s style and a few historical instances were disguised, they could be convinced it was about today’s political climate. This unfortunately proves his doubts about any positive change to be well-founded.
His points are made so eloquently that, if it weren’t a loan from the library, more of this book would have been underlined than not. His solid voice and confident grasp on what he wanted to say combined to create incredibly poignant and powerful sentences that flowed together seamlessly.
