Read January 2025
Reading this on my phone was probably a mistake on my part, as it doesn’t lend itself very well to being read in many short sittings. It’s good though!

James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time is a masterclass in brevity and brilliance. What struck me most was Baldwin’s profound deconstruction of his former Christian beliefs—a journey of decolonizing the mind and grappling with the ways religion can be both a source of solace and a tool of oppression. His reflections on growing up in the church are unflinchingly honest and challenge readers to think critically about the systems of belief we inherit.
This book is short, direct, and deeply impactful. Baldwin’s insights into the Black experience in the United States are as relevant today as ever, making this an essential read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of identity, faith, and systemic injustice. Highly recommended!

There is literally no reason not to read this. Do it tonight. Do it right now. It's necessary.

Two beautifully written letters from Baldwin that I had the honor of reading. I got my first taste of Baldwin in I Am Not Your Negro, and then when I read Beale Street, but this was the first in depth piece of non-fiction I've read by him. I appreciate his honesty even when he felt his opinions were unpopular (particularly at that time). I try to imagine what it would have been like to read this back in the 60s. Baldwin was a revolutionary thinker. I can't wait to read more of his work.
I wonder if it was burdensome to be so egregiously talented. Love revisiting Baldwin’s work.
