Genial bog! Jatak for hedonisme, skønhed, lyster og moralsk fordærv. Wilde er jo bare god.
I went into this book completely blind and was at first surprised at the gothic horror tag.
This is indeed horror.
Beautifully written and filled with quotable aphorisms. It’s a study of some of the worst traits found in humanity: vanity, shallowness, and narcissistic cruelty. As relevant now as it was in the 1800’s.

this is undoubtedly my favorite novel ever written, and i don’t think anything will surpass it anytime soon. before reading it, i was stuck in a slump, going through books that failed to capture my interest. then i picked this one up, and everything changed. it stands out in my reading journey for how clearly it captured themes that continue to fascinate me: particularly those exploring morality and morally ambiguous characters who may gradually descend into corruption or madness lol.
i want to start of by praising how brilliant oscar wilde’s writing is. for a classic, which might seem daunting or outside the usual reading habits of many today, it’s witty and immediately engaging. i genuinely believe this isn’t only an accessible work, but also a highly relevant and thought-provoking one. in a world increasingly focused on vanity and the pursuit of pleasure without reflection, it asks us to pause and consider the ideals we pursue and the values we uphold.
at its core, this novel is a critique of those ideals. dorian gray’s lack of conscience isn’t something to admire or emulate, but a warning. it’s the state of his portrait, which reveals the decay and corruption of his soul, that exposes the cost of a life lived in denial of consequence. no level of perfection in appearance can free us from our inner self. so is the pursuit of an ideal image ever worth trading for one’s soul and personal values?

This book is a literary masterpiece, that I have confirmed for myslef. It hides so many secret meanings and symbolics, carrying Wilde's legacy. It is not about liking, or even agreeing with the characters but about understanding what is in the core and letting it offer you a new perspective on the world.

This is one of those classic stories that can be improved through its adaptations (I have yet to see/read any). That isn't to say that the story is not excellent, especially for its time, but it could use some polishing, some tightening here and there, some heightened suspense.
Except Basil. Basil was perfect.
