I am not going to lie I did think about DNF-ing the book and the rest of the series. I also was originally going to give it two stars as well, I told a friend that I felt like I was reading before the coffee goes cold in a different font as most of the chapters were titled the same thing. however I pushed through and I won’t lie the complete twist that happened in the last two chapters ended up having me super intrigued about a certain character. So I am gonna be going onto book three to see what happens with this character.

3.5 stars. Audiobook.
There were some moments in this story that moved me to the point of tearing up, and other moments where I was bored and it felt repetitive. I’m not sure if it was the translation at work, or just the nature of the original writing style, but I felt that some things were explained that really didn’t need to be, or we were told the same information multiple times.
There is also this aspect that I’ve found in almost all Japanese literature I’ve read where the story focuses on portraying simply what is. Not what the author wants it to be, how it should be changed, or the morality of an action. Just simply the situation as it stands. It’s a very different feeling from most western literature and while it rubbed me the wrong way at first, I’m starting to appreciate the beauty in it the more I read. This series is chock full of that.
Overall, I’m glad I read this, though I’m not sure it’ll be a new favorite.
