All's Well

Excuse me, what?!

I would describe this as Shakespeare meets The Substance, and I’m here for it.

I do wish the phrase “all’s well” were used maybe half as frequently. Maybe even less than half. All the winking was a little exhausting, honestly. But this novel was so weird and riveting and kind of a lot of fun in an uncomfortable, sweaty, mouth-breathing way. Loved it.

Really dark and interesting interpolation of All’s Well That Ends Well, with the King’s chronic pain paralleling Miranda’s. Weird fucking book. After finishing it, I still couldn’t tell you what happened. But I did read most of it in one sitting, then got concerned that my head voice sounded a bit too spooky. So read at your own risk because it’s also
quite hard to put down.

This authors writing style is very interesting and addicting. This book was slow and difficult to read at times. The parts of the book that are real representations of life are depressing and challenging. The parts that are creative and mysterious are disturbing enough to make you read on. There’s a lot to unpack and think about.

Miranda’s descent includes a lot of stuff I didn’t care much about and struggled to connect to the story, and the end of the book was confusing at first. But overall a great read, especially for the chronically ill, the women filled with anger, people who have a small piece of them who desire revenge for the way the world has treated them, or fellow theater nerds.

this took me MONTHS to read which is unusual for me. it is so frikin slow paced and the characters are quite unlikeable. and you don’t really understand what’s real and what’s not for a long time, but i do enjoy that kind of reads :)

mona awad is def one of my favorite authors.

DO read if you want a thought-provoking, Shakespeare-esque, play within a play, social commentary on what it's like to be a woman with back pain in modern life.

DON'T read if you want something fun and light with a loveable character.

I read for a book club. I had to switch to audio book at about 30% because it was too painful and too much detail for me to read. Normally this would have been a DNF, not because it was bad but because it was not for me. Discussing at book club and the overall ending pushed this rating from a 3 to a 4*. But recommend you don't jump into this blind. It was my first book by Awad and it's a unique voice style.
