New Avengers, Vol 4: A Perfect World is a morality tale with the highest possible stakes. The Avengers face the defenders of an alternate Earth which is about to collide with the Marvel Earth. The alternate Earth heroes (all based on DC superheroes) are pure, noble, good, and uncomplicated. They would never consider killing anyone, let alone an entire planet, to save themselves. They insist there must be another way. Hope must prevail. The Avengers have created a device to destroy the other Earth and just doing that has tainted their souls. Doctor Strange has even offered to sell his soul for the power to destroy worlds. And when it comes down to the final seconds, who will detonate the bomb? In a nutshell, this is the type of extreme peril, moral dilemma I love in fiction.

A large chunk of Hickman's Avengers run hs been wheel-spinning and over-explaining, so this volume, where we get to see two different Incursions (universes colliding), and see the Illuminatis' stories actually progress, is a welcome relief.

Honestly, if you wanted to love Hickman's Avengers run you could pretty much just read [b:New Avengers, Volume 1: Everything Dies|17251112|New Avengers, Volume 1 Everything Dies|Jonathan Hickman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1409500228l/17251112._SY75_.jpg|23840560], [b:Infinity|18513586|Infinity|Jonathan Hickman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1527103514l/18513586._SY75_.jpg|26644776], and this volume, and then die into the Time Runs Out books (which I haven't read yet, and I'm hoping live up to the potential of this book).

This is the promised action movie that the series has teased and failed to deliver on (Infinity, itself, contained a lot of action but it jumped around too much to be compelling). After a long drout in this story, I"m once again excited to see where it goes (it goes to [b:Secret Wars|25066824|Secret Wars|Jonathan Hickman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1455502178l/25066824._SX50_.jpg|44751586], I know, but I'm curious how the characters will get there).

Slow and kind of boring. This story-line is a high concept and it is interesting but I just don't care for how it is executed and it just doesn't get better. The moral question is an interesting. And watching the characters weigh the question should be more interesting than it is. Not bad art or writing.

It’s a very Hickman thing to spend years leading our expectations to one moment, then pushing beyond it in unexpected ways.

Great comics.

++namor stealing the show with his scenes
++Black Panther being some really cool panel time with reconnecting with the old Panther Souls (also his dad looks like a BA)
+Almost every hero encounter and dialogue recharge is pitch perfect.
+ending of the first issue
++Curve ball of what to be expected right away when the incursion begins... But then Namor
-not sure what Madman is up to and I wish it was a bit more explained why he's drilling... Need less vagueness right at this point
++Fantastic choice of color palette on all these scenes. It's stinking from page to page
+Doctor's shifting gifts/curses
-Tony didn't do anything ha
++Dang Doctor Stephen pulling out the big guns and getting things dark real quick
+++Tension of deceiving the date of the new incursion earth. It's done real well.
++Sun God crippled and pleading is....dang rough
-namor/panther fighting was a little overdone
++What a build up toward the end.

Really impressed with the directions this took. This is the first time I've seen Marvel take the characters like this. We've seen the good-guys make tough choices and being crappy, but this feels really organic and troubling. Is there a way for any of them to recover from this? And the new team formed at the end of this volume is REALLY intriguing.

The more I read of Hickman's stuff leading up to Secret Wars, the more I enjoy it.

Okay, I don't think this is high art or anything but MAN, what an ending. I'm constantly enjoying how bonkers this stuff is getting, and I think Hickman actually manages to pull off just how monstrous the main cast has become.
