The themes in this novel are very hard. But it's written beautifully and the characters are lovely.

This was a beautiful, brutal book about a Métis family and the fallout of a violent crime. The multiple alternating perspectives made for a compelling read. I loved the way that the women were the center of this family.

This book is devastating. I learned so much. Ignored my family to finish it on Canada day. Can't wait to read more from this Canadian author.

I picked up this book about a year ago after hearing so many good things about it from the Canada Reads program and others. But it was only yesterday that I finally started reading it. And I loved it! I couldn't put it down.
I'm a sucker for a book with a family tree as it is a great tool to understand the relationships. I probably referred to it about 10 times during my read, as I got to know the characters and their relationships.
This wasn't just a well-written story; it offered so much more, such as examples of all the ways women are strong and support each other, insights into the challenges many indigenous people face and fall prey to, into familial bonds, and so much more. I feel like I really got to know these characters and felt their pain.
So glad I finally cracked the first page! Amazing book.

I just love Katherena Vermette's writing style so much. Her characters are thoughtfully crafted and lived in, and it transported me backwards to relatable moments with my own family. The Break is beautiful, raw, and unforgiving at times, while paying homage to our Matriarchs and reminding us of the damage we are capable of inflicting on each other as woman and girls.

I was nervous to start this book because I knew it contained a lot of sexual violence. However, I’m glad I read it because the connections between characters and the fallout of violence over time was really powerful. Highly recommend.

Started reading this one for a book club and I read a few chapters before I had to put it aside. This book is very emotional and heavyyyy. It was not the right time for me to focus on the content and really give it the credit it deserves so I pressed pause. I hope to pick it back up when I can really sit with it.

A dark and see gritty intergenerational saga that manages to be simultaneously heartbreaking and hopeful. Told in shifting perspectives of an interconnected women who aren't always aware of the fragile web that binds them.
The lives of the women and girls in The Break are are not easy, yet they are resilient in a way that makes them survivors. Vermette does the unimaginable - making the reader empathize with even the "villains" of the story and helping the reader to understand that relationships and connections are complex.
This book has won numerous awards, and deserved each and every one.
