Finally was able to read this book. Completely out of season but on my TBR for years, so when available to borrow, I clicked ok.
Funny enough to visualize the movie and actors but predictable and caricatural and very white suburban and doesn’t age well in today’s lens.
Still entertaining.

I love Ruth Rendell. This is just an amazingly conceived and written book. A creepy and convincing study in how two rather ordinary women end up as murderers. And such an interesting reflection on the nature of illiteracy.

Wow! A gripping and horrifying novel which starkly depicts the brutality and unpredictability of life in medieval times, while managing to be uplifting and hopeful as well.
So many characters came in and out of the novel (as happens in real life) and horrible experiences were interspersed with the relief of kindness and mercy.

This book was so subtly brilliant. We are told in the first line who the murderer is and every line that follows slowly and expertly brings us back to the bare fact told in that line. This was a psychological journey- my favorite type of mystery.

I forced myself to finish this, but it was a slog.  Someone called this a whyduni  instead of a whodunit.  And I think that's the best description for this book. I just found it very boring and tedious. Not for me.
