This started off strong, dragged a bit in the middle, and then had a great finish. I almost think it would have been a better book if it was edited down about 100 pages from the middle.

I think this book was solid, but the comparisons to Name of the Wind are a bit farfetched. This book rushes a lot. It doesn't feel as much like an enjoyable story as it does a lesson (though it's not clear in what), and this makes it less enjoyable to relax and lose oneself in. The story itself was good, though not perfect, and the characters were a bit less developed than I would have expected. Most of all, I found the format to be a bit awkward. The present day vs. long historical sections were not as well done as in the Name of the Wind, and often ruined bits of the story by telling what would happen in the next historical part (which I found extremely frustrating). Overall, worth reading for fans of the genre, but not a book I'd recommend to anyone else.

This is some really awesome book. I devoured it in a couple of days, with a compulsion to keep reading it every minute of the day, barely pausing. Everything within this pages beckons of a living, grand world with an array of characteres that are enticing and make you follow along with every one of their journeys.

It could have been five stars, but the second part was not as powerful as the first one, so - one star minus. In general - and excellent high-fantasy with strong protagonist, many colourful characters and a perfect world-building. I'm looking forward to the sequel. A must-read for all the fans of high-fantasy genre!
