Soooo funny and witty and creative! I loved this book. A dash of monster smut with a touch of war strategy and a heroine that is strong. Chefs kiss

Overall Vibes: Fantasy Isekai Timeloop but with Deadpooly commentary. The footnotes just keep coming.
Hot Sauce Scale: 2.5 (raunchy commentary but all sex scenes are fade-to-black)
If you liked the Deadpool movies, you’ll probably like this book. I know the Goodreads blurb says Guardians of the Galaxy, but that’s not the vibe at all.
The FMC Davi is stuck in a time loop, and dying (well, being killed most of the time) resets it. She’s been through the loop so many times by the point the book begins that she’s gone a little wonky in the brain. Remember that montage in Groundhog Day where Bill Murray’s character offs himself over and over, culminating in driving off a cliff with the groundhog in the car? We’re at that point in the story from page one.
The other people and wilders (think fantasy species like orcs, snake people [sneeple], fox people, etc.) are basically NPCs to her at this point, and it’s not surprising that she’s devolved into a “f*ck, marry, kill” mindset like she’s playing Skyrim and planning to start over soon anyway.
I know there were some review complaints about her being a “sex-obsessed bisexual woman” but I felt her sexual proclivities had less to do with her sexuality and more to do with the fact that she’s stuck in this dying-over-and-over time loop and sex just seems like an option for fun with no consequences.
As an aside, I’m a bisexual woman myself, and I wasn’t personally offended by the character. If the MC were a man doing the same things Davi does, I don’t think this specific criticism would be as common. Obviously, not going to stomp on anyone’s opinion to the contrary. Your opinions and feelings are valid.
The book contains gore, self-harm, swearing, raunchy language, weird metaphors, references to masturbation, fourth-wall breaking. You know, all the Deadpool stuff. All sexual scenes are fade-to-black (with a usually snide comment on her chosen partner), so there’s nothing NC-17 here. It’s just a solid R.
Davi does have character growth, don’t worry. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Sort of. She The sequel releases later this month and is supposed to fully wrap up the story. I’m excited to see how everything plays out, and I’ve definitely become invested in this lil weirdo and her minions.

is this the book that finally makes me write reviews again?
honestly there's something about this to me that made me not want to put it down despite at every turn not really feeling like anything special was going on. i could have done with 50% less pop culture references but in a shocking turn of events i will probably pick up the sequel.

I want to like this book. The setting and plot are exactly the kind of nerdy fantasy fiction I normally like. Imagine Frodo stuck in a Groundhog Day time loop who decides to become Lord Sauron instead of destroying him.
Unfortunately it's ruined by two things:
1. The protagonist is a hyper sexualised bisexual female character written by a man. At times it feels written by a 15 year old boy who just discovered girl parts for the first time. Every chapter has a moment where the main character lusts after another character. It's pointlessly sexual in a very unsexy way.
2. Gross overuse of the Pratchett footnote. I started skipping them altogether because most of the time they felt like punchlines for jokes that never really existed, or random one liners from the author to show off his nerd cred with pup culture references or mathematical workings for probability outcomes. Too much for me.
I won't be reading the second book any time soon.
