Quite a fun book, immediately book the second and did renew my membership in the bad decisions book club. I have a few quibbles, but overall this is a fun romp.

In no particular order: I think one of my biggest gripes with the book is the time loop. It’s a major selling point in the marketing, and the first ten percent or so you see a lot of this, but after that it just kinda disappears until the last maybe 15% of the book? The stakes in general are surprisingly low, and I think seeing more of the time loop being a real threat would have raised the stakes. Instead Davi just kinda coasts through. It also means that
when the rules changes and suddenly the time loop resets to a different place, it doesn’t have the same impact on the reader is does on Davi in the book, who suddenly has to deal with this being real
The other issue I have with the time loop is the paradox that Davi cant remember anything from her personal life, but remembers a massive amount of pop culture references. And while I get that we’ll remember jingles way more than our second grade teachers, Davi doesn’t remember where she lived (maybe Florida) or anything about her family, which was just … sad to me.

The plot itself is fairly straightforward, there’s some clear references to Douglas Adams and Discworld, and most of the plot is very video game inspired. Davi goes on a series of quests to build up her horde that increase in difficulty as needed. There’s something in it that reminds me too of the Legends and Lattes vibe, which felt like a coffee shop game honestly. I do worry a little that these authors are aiming for Discworld and very much missing the mark. It’s funny yes, but is it angry? Is it satirical? Ehhhh not so much.

There’s a good few other reviews that get annoyed with Davi and especially the sex, and yes she does read like a woman written by a man, but also - the narrative doesn’t really judge her for having sex, and the world she’s fallen into is refreshingly open minded which is always nice.

So to wrap up, this is fun, don’t think about it too hard, and then read the second half.

I finished this book in one sitting. Which I’m not proud of but it absolutely devored. Davi an unstoppable force, the if she wanted to she would. The painful experience of dying multiple times did not stop her once she set her mind on a goal. Trying to be the dark lord definitely has its difficulties, since it’s the first time ever so there’s nothing she knows about the process. Her attitude, randomness and hijinks really made the book. Staying alive to reach the convocation has never been more difficult but at least she has the experience of hundreds of lives. High stakes, action, adventure and even romance all you can want in a book.

But alas, not all books are perfect, and I tend to be picky. The tangents Davi would go off on about the most random things sometimes became difficult to follow after a while. With the combination of the flashbacks to important scenes that turned her luck around, were a bit much. Making the book quirky and unique but me wanting to know what else would happen, had me sighing.
