As a second book in a trilogy, Fevered Star does a lot of the things that middle books do - a lot of traveling back and forth as characters have to get to new places and discover new backstory, small expansions in the magic system, moments that begin to deepen the world building and conflict, etc. It felt less intentional than the first book, but likely just because we are no longer counting down toward a specific event, and have to navigate the "after." I loved the symmetry of the starting and ending action on sun rock and our expanded understanding of the gods and god powers.
There were a few POVs I wanted more of, but I ultimately understand why we had the characters we did in this installment and appreciate where we ended and where we will likely go from here.
Again, the full-cast audio production is excellent and I highly recommend!

The worldbuilding and magic really make this series. Everything is just unabashedly cool. Giant birds, scary people who can turn into murders of crows, spooky dream powers. Some of the characters are more engaging than others (Naranpa is somehow more of a drip than ever) and there's a touch of second book slump, but the good is worth coming back for.

So! Good! I think that it's incredibly interesting to go beyond a prophecy and see the aftermath. And so much is happening here. All the characters were so lonely and in pain and it's just a study in what trauma does to people and the ways that not having support around you hurts people further.
Naranpa's chapters were the best and everything that happened with her was so engaging. I think that the only thing I personally was annoyed with was how Xiala's entire personality just revolves around Serapio. Like, I get she's lonely but meh. Wasn't a fan of that. I did love her little journey with Iktan and I can't wait to cry over Iktan reuniting with Naranpa in book 3.
