it’s good, not as much as the first book, but i was intrigued by the political atmosphere underlying the entire book. getting introduced to new clans and peoples was cool too. there’s one detail that i’m confused about and maybe it’ll be resolved in the last book. but what happened with the comet?? naranpa mentioned seeing it in the last chapter and balam was like, we’ll use it to defeat the crow god but he didn’t do anything yet? perhaps it’s just set up for the last book and i’m impatient to know what’ll happen lol hopefully it’s not a forgotten detail

I really enjoyed Black Sun and sure this has same things I liked in first book like writing and world building but mostly nothing happened.

"But fury was a privilege she could not indulge."

This felt less like its own story and more like a bridge between books one and three. Though the world and writing remain great, the characters and plot became inconsistent. Overall, the book was a bit too slow and aimless. It did set up some pretty interesting shit for book three though! Also I need to know what Rebecca Roanhorse put in these books because they are so insanely compulsively readable.

On the characters, I mostly liked what was going on with Naranpa, like she's basically a mirror to Serapio now and they're like if Shadow and Bone ate more. I also liked Serapio's arc of taking agency, but it was too meandering and his actions in the end felt like they needed to be built up more. Xiala was done the most dirty because girl did fucking nothing. I do love how much her and Serapio yearned for each other though, I mean, exhibit A:

"It was as if he were made only of need, a thousand shards of desire in the shape of a man, and he would give whatever he must to reach her."

And they say romance is dead? Also pairing up Iktan's plotline with Xiala's was INSPIRED, xe remains iconic as always, would've been even better if Xiala actually had shit to do.

Love seeing how all the threads are tangling in this second installment and can’t wait to see how they unravel in book three!! Love Rebecca’s writing, her complex characters, and the beautiful world of Meridian
