Normally I enjoy British humor, but not this time. Not this time.

This is a great audio reading of a fantastic book. All the voices are great and make for an engaging listen.

I’m so bummed…I thought I was going to really enjoy this one. Generally, I enjoy the type of humor presented in this book and have enjoyed works by Gaiman in the past. To be honest though, I don’t think I was in the right headspace for it. There are some things about the book I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed regardless- like how certain ways of speaking were misspelled so horribly that if I weren’t listening to the audiobook along with reading a physical copy I wouldn’t have had a clue as to what was being said, the sheer number of characters, and honestly some of the footnotes seemed excessive (granted, if I hadn’t read this over two days 2/3 of these may not have been issues). I also really thought Aziraphale and Crowley were going to be more prominently featured in the book, but they weren’t as much as I was expecting due to the promotion of the tv show (haven’t watched the show yet so that may have better set expectations but I like to read the book before seeing the adaptations…shocking take, I know).

But to be honest I think I’m a bit burned out on reading right now. This book makes read like 206 of the year and my brain just feels over it. At least with anything that requires an abundance of focus right now. I’d take a break, but well, there are a bunch of books I want to read and also the competitive side of me knows I’ll never read this many books in a year again and wants to see just how many I can get in. Who am I competing with, you may ask? Literally no one. Except for maybe my future self and that bish is going down.

Anyway, my plan is to watch the show and try it again. I think I could enjoy it more at a later time.

*Edited to add that I do recommend the audiobook with the full cast recording that has David Tennant.
Also, trigger warnings- this book was written in the 90s so there’s a little bit of casual homophobia, a singular use of the r-word and of the f-word as an insult. I’m sure there’s more, potentially not intentional but again it was written in the 90s. Those were just the most jarring for me. The female characters don’t suck though, so yay.

Huh. I didn't get it.

I am absolutely thrilled that such a wonderful book is being turned into a television series—the preview on Amazon Prime Videos bodes well for this apocalyptic tale. Ironic.
I just finished a reread for my Book Club. I still really like the whole premise of the book, but the numerous references to 1990’s technology rather dates the story. I’ve downgraded my rating to 4 out of five stars.
