Helpful but a little outdated

The structure and flow of this book was solid. I picked it up because so many of my entrepreneurial friends recommended it. I wish it didn’t read so patronizing (wise man teaches small business lessons to naive/misinformed woman). And many of the terms and roles in business seemed outdated. A lot of factory and production references. So many commodities these days are intangible services. Would love to have seen more references to that.

Here's the one I wish I had read BEFORE I started my own consulting practice, BEFORE I had spent $42,000 to have an assistant doing all the tasks I dislike, BEFORE I fell flat on my face trying to be all things to all clients.

The "E" for those who haven't read this one stands for Entrepreneur. And the "E-Myth" is the belief that everyone who opens their own business is an entrepreneur at heart. Turns out, most of us aren't... but we need to be. Or, at least, we all need to perform that function if we want to avoid becoming a statistic.

I am a big believer in self-employment. The freedom, the income potential, the quality of life are superior to any way of earning a living I know of. I've told anyone who asked that they should do it. Figure out what you are good at. Figure out how to get others to pay you for doing what you are good at. Set out a shingle and go. Just do it.

Now I tell them to run to the bookstore and get The E-Myth Revisited. Gerber spells out all the classic mistakes, describes all the things a new business owner must think through, all the roles that must be filled - even in one-person operations. It's an MBA, mother's advice, and 10 years of on-the-job training all rolled into one. Thanks Mr. Gerber!

I won't rate the book as I didn't think it related to my goals directly. It is mainly targeted for small business owners or ones who want to have their own business for the freedom it might bring, and for that I believe it does a great job. Takes its time at times which I think is intentional due to trying to invoke emotion in its target audience before driving home an idea. I would prefer less of that but I still appreciated why that style was chosen. Along with Profit First, I would really recommend this to small business owners or ones who want to open a business.

DID NOT FINISH: 5%

Tentative DNF at 5% because everything I've heard so far was already explained in the recommendation I saw for this book in the first place. Also, the author's voice is kinda putting me to sleep right now.

This book reveals why most small businesses fail and how to structure your business so it runs like a well-oiled machine without you. Hint: treat them like a franchise from the beginning. It will change how you think about entrepreneurship.

There were some sound principles in here, but I missed most of them because of the touchy-feely parts.

I'm still mulling this over...some parts were entirely too wordy for my taste, but using one business owner as an example for the theories was helpful in grasping the concepts.

Very interesting and helpful
slow-paced

A must-read for anyone considering starting their own business or overwhelmed by the business they already have!
