Review to come after book group.

Hmmm...probably more like a 3.5, and normally I round up but for some reason I don't feel inclined to do so with this book, I think because it ultimately disappointed me a little. It's certainly engaging and entertaining, but I don't know if all of the interesting vignettes really come together as more than the sum of their parts. It just didn't fully jell for me, and felt a little gratuitous and pointless. But I did have a good time reading it.

Phenomenal. A must read.

This book started out slowly for me, it may have been where my head was at. It really grabbed me midway through.
I can’t say there was a character I related to, or liked personally, but I wanted to know more about them when I finish.
This book was well written and had the cadence of the sea. Familiar ups and downs and comforting themes weaved gently with young romance, crime, and thrilling tamed suspense.

One of the best novels I've read in a long time. This father-daughter story gripped me from page 1 and never let go. I was turned inside out by the story of Loo and her father, especially by the intensity of their love for one another. The detailed prose only added to my love of this book. Highly recommended.

I read this after My Absolute Darling. Well-written; still, My Absolute Darling is the one I remember.

4.5 rounded up.

DNF at page 140.

“This isn’t your fault, Dad.”

“It is,” said Hawley. “Everything that’s happened and is happening and is going to happen.”

As a parent, everything is our fault, right? Only in Hawley’s case, it actually is. He lived a dangerous and reckless life (with the bullet scars to prove it). Only now, he’s trying to do things right. Instead of running from hotel to hotel with his young daughter in tow, he’s settling down in his (dead) wife’s hometown. He’s trying, and he’s terrified.

This was well told and well-organized (I love chapter titles that make sense! In this case, we start each chapter knowing which bullet wound will happen...and then the backstory reveals how.)

Great characters (and not too many, thank goodness), and definitely unique.

Started strong but didn't hold up until the end for me.
